Today we are so habituated to social media platforms such as facebook, Whatsapp , Instagram and youtube that we can hardly imagine our lives without them.
But sometimes I just think how would our lives be had there been no social media platforms.

Had there been no Social media at all , we may have had to face following disadvantages :
- Loss of connections : The world is not a small place to live in and people live separately from their friends and family members. Social media platforms such as Facebook, whatsapp and instagram helps people to stay in touch with their loved ones . Such platforms also keep people informed about the activities and whereabouts of their near and dear ones. Through messaging features of various social media platforms people wish each other on special occasions such as birthdays, anniversaries and festivals.
- Lack of Opinion Formation : Social Media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook helps a person in expressing his opinion over various issues.In an ever evolving world marred with volatility on all fronts , people express their opinion through texts and multimedia posts on social media. Also the scope of mass media is limited as it cannot show everyone’s opinion ,social media helps a large number of people to express their opinion.
- Difficulty in marketing : Social media sites such as Facebook , whatsapp and youtube help people in marketing their products and services which in turn helps them in increasing their sales. People post the advertisements of their products and services by which they are able to attract their prospective buyers. People create groups and pages on whatsapp and facebook inorder to post all the relevant information with regards to their products and services . Digital marketing is fast becoming a popular medium used by corporates for the marketing of products and services on social media platforms.
- Not so Smart phone : By using Smartphones one can surf through facebook , instagram and whatsapp very easily. People instantly post their checkins, pictures by using their apps from their smartphones. Without the presence of social media apps the purpose of smartphones would not have been met adequately.
- Lack of Infotainment : Social media platforms not only enable people to send messages or express opinions. They even help people to get entertained and avoid boredom. Through youtube one can watch videos which keep people entertained. Also people use youtube videos to learn about various things such as new recipes , investment opportunities , new skills. Students who prepare for various competitive exams watch youtube videos in order to clear their doubts with regards to their subjects . This might not have been possible had there been no social media sites such as youtube.
So from the above mentioned reasons one can clearly understand that our day to day lives would have been drastically affected without social media. Social media platforms not only helps us in sending messages or pleasantries but also helps us in our businesses , studies , learning new skills etc.
Thus Social media today plays a larger role , sometimes even more than the mass media.
